Russia & Ukraine:
Three Years of War & Sanctions
Over the past three years, global sanctions have considerably diminished Russia’s ability to sustain its aggressive war—and may yet prove even more effective in achieving their intended goals.
In a recent webinar Russia & Ukraine: Three Years of War & Sanctions, hosted by the Institute for Financial Integrity (IFI), speakers Pavlo Verkhniatskyi and Irene Nickole Kenyon examined the key developments in sanctions policy since the outbreak of full-scale war, identifying major ongoing challenges and exploring practical solutions at both corporate and governmental levels.
Nicki Kenyon, Associate Managing Director at IFI, provided a detailed overview of the 2024 Sanctions Timeline, highlighting the principal Russian targets, the role of secondary sanctions, and the growing extraterritorial application of EU and UK sanctions regimes.
Pavlo Verkhniatskyi, Managing Partner at COSA, focused on the evolution of client requests regarding sanctions compliance, outlining effective approaches to mitigating evasion risks and underlining the critical role of corporate due diligence in end-user assessment.
An important part of the webinar was the Q&A session, which addressed pressing issues such as the use of cryptocurrencies for sanctions evasion, enforcement within the nuclear and titanium sectors, and potential reforms to strengthen sanctions implementation.
